Ghana’s U-20 team the Black Satellites at last found their rhythm and rattled in four goals past fellow Group A foes USA, conceding just one in the final Group match of the ongoing World Youth Championships in Turkey.
The resounding victory notwithstanding, the Satellites need a favour from other groups before they can qualify into the next stage of the competition as one of the four best third placed teams. Ghana having conceded four goals and scored just one in the opening Group games were perching at the bottom of the group with no point and needed nothing short of victory against US in their final group game to nurse any hope of qualification. And when the dust finally settled it was Ghana who won 4-1 against US. Frank Acheampong opened the goal harvest when he pounced on a poorly cleared ball and fired from close range. The Satellites had missed such great goal scoring opportunities with Assifuah being the worst culprit. Villareal forced a superb finger tip save from Antwi when he fired a goal bound thunderbolt with his cultured left foot. When both teams returned from the dug-out it was the Africans who were determined to score more goals and it did come. Ebenezer Assifuah was served a delectable pass by Yiadom and his finish was sumptuous. The Liberty Professional player turned his marker inside and out before letting a well curled but powerful strike which zoomed straight to the top right corner of the post for Ghana’s second goal. USA responded with Oniel heading home a superb cross from the right. They were buoyed by the consolation and pressed on for more goals. But that left the US defence leaking badly with Ghana rattling in two more goals. Assifuah got on the score sheet again and Kennedy Ashia also scoring minutes after coming on. US is out. Ghana will still hope that their well deserved victory will be worthwhile.
