Threat Messages after I Preached Against Jonathan's Re-election - Enugu Catholic Priest

Rev. Fr. Mbaka

Enugu Catholic priest and founder of the Adoration Ministry, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, yesterday raised an alarm that he has been receiving threat messages following his New Year eve message where he said that Nigeria would be doomed if President Goodluck Jonathan is re-elected. However, the priest says he is not afraid of death.

In a sermon at the Christ the King Catholic Parish GRA, Enugu, yesterday, Rev. Mbaka said if such threats could move him, he would not even be standing before the congregation that morning.

"Tell them I am not afraid of them. I have said what I was asked to say. The only word I have for them is Isaiah 54:15,17: 'Surely they shall gather, but because the gathering is not of God they shall scatter. No weapon fashioned against me shall prosper.',"" he said.

"They said Buhari gave me money, but I have never met with Buhari. I don't know him in person. I only delivered the message I was given and I stand by that message because the future of this country is bleak with Jonathan on the saddle."

Accordingto Mbaka, he had called Mrs. Patience Jonathan severally before he gave the December 31, 2014 message but couldn't get through to her.

"When she came here, I told her to give me her number so that I could give her messages, but thrice she refused. It was later she told one of the pastors with her to give me his number," he stated.

"So, before that message, I had called the number for two weeks but it was always the Personal Assistant to the pastor that picked the calls."

Mbaka re-affirmed yesterday that if Jonathan is re-elected, "the next four years will be hell for the country. People are crying of hanger but then you will see what is hunger."

Senators Plot to Impeach David Mark; No Such Plot – Senate President

David Mark

According to reports, ggrieved senators in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) who lost return tickets to the Upper Chamber in 2015 are plotting against the Senate leadership.

Their grievance is that the Senator David Mark-led chamber did not do enough to protect them in the run-up to the December 8 Senate primary.

Besides, shortly before the Senate adjourned plenary two weeks ago, some lawmakers were compiling impeachable offences against President Goodluck Jonathan.

The plot then, which was championed mainly by the opposition senators, was to table the President's alleged impeachable offences as soon as the chamber resumes plenary this week.

In a major twist, the senators, with some PDP senators now joining their ranks, have decided to rather kick-start the removal of the Senate leadership instead, starting with Mark.

According to a source, a senator yesterday evening said "the plan has changed. We never expected the party to treat us this way. We stood by the party when there was turbulence occasioned by the emergence of the new PDP."

"There was a plot then to impeach the same leadership but we stepped in and stopped it with our sheer number. In fact, we used our personal contacts to talk to the plotters and they backed down. We prevailed on them not to rock the boat moreso as the Seventh Senate had just a few months to go.

"We thought the party would take note of what we did and also, note our loyalty to the party and reward us. Rather, we were not even protected in these primaries. Can you imagine the party leaving us at the mercy of governors?"

As replacement for David Mark, the senators are considering either George Akume or Bukola Saraki. According to them, they do not want "the Senate Presidency to leave the North Central." Meanwhile, the senators have vowed to fully throw their weight behind the embattled Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, to retain his seat.

However, David Mark's Media Adviser, Kola Ologbondiyan, dismissed the alleged plot to remove his boss. According to him, "There's no such plot."

BREAKING NEWS: Akinwunmi Ambode Wins Lagos APC Gubernatorial Ticket With 3735 Votes

Although some have published since yesterday that Ambode has won the gubernatorial ticket in Lagos, the Lagos primaries just ended minutes ago.

Akinwunmi Ambode, the man widely believed to have been anointed by Bola Tinubu the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has emerged the winner of the Lagos governorship primaries.

About 5,700 delegates from 20 local government areas cast their votes for the 13 candidates who sought the ticket of the party.
Ambode defeated the other 12 aspirants with 3,735 votes.
The votes for other candidates are as follows: Lanre Ope [0 vote ], Abayomi Sutton [0 vote], Tokunbo Agbesanwa [0 vote], Tokunbo Wahab [7 votes], Adekunle Disu [9 votes], Tola Kasali [68 votes], Lekan Pitan [112 votes], Adeyemi Supo Shasore [121 votes], Ikuforiji [182 votes], Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon (GOS) [272 votes], Obafemi Hamzat [1,201].

It was a peaceful activity but many believe Ambode won because he has been anointed discretly by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode is the former permanent secretary of the ministry of finance in Lagos State. He resigned voluntarily in 2012, probably to pursue his ambition of becoming the next governor of the state. He is a chartered accountant and a Christian from Epe (although some have debunked that by publishing his JAMB form which he used in gaining admission to University of Lagos, where he wrote that he is from Ondo State).

Do you think other candidates will go to court based on the state of origin written on his Jamb for?

NASS Invasion: Police Acted in Good Faith – Minister of Police Affairs

Contrary to criticisn by the All Progressive Congress (APC), the Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Abdul Jelili Adesiyan, yesterday said that the recent invasion of National Assembly by police and other security personnel was done in good faith.

In a statement issued by Adesiyan's Chief Press Secretary, Wale Akinola, Adesiyan said that those who criticised police activities in the whole scenario, were only mischievous, unpatriotic and self serving, adding that the police only acted based on the intelligent report to forestall breakdown of law and order.

According to him, "There is the need to clear the air as the Minister of Police Affairs about the activities of police and other security personnel during the recent drama at the National Assembly.

"It is noteworthy to let the public know that the police acted in good faith and not to spite the members of the lower chamber as being peddled by the opposition party. The action of the police was based on the intelligence received that some lawmakers were planning to storm the Assembly complex with thugs armed with dangerous weapons, the development which if the police did not act timely, could have snowballed into a serious chaos with grievous resultant effects.

"If you met your personal house under locks and keys and you don't have the key with you and you don’t even know who locked your house would you instantly break it or find out why it was locked, before you take the next actions?"

Adesiyan, therefore, advised politicians across party lines to constantly toe the path of honour, respect rule of law and law enforcement agents, who are out to ensure that peace, tranquillity as well as maximum security of lives and property is achieved in the country.

APC Holds Convention Primaries in Lagos

All Progressive Congress, APC, Presidential Convention Committee, led by Kayode Fayemi, yesterday announced that it has finally settled for Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos as the venue for the December 10 and 11 presidential primaries.

4 of the 5 presidential aspirants had last weekend petitioned the National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, kicking against the holding of the convention in Lagos. The aspirants - former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Kano State Governor, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, his Imo State counterpart, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Publisher of Leadership newspapers, Mr. Sam Nda-Isiah - recommended that the venue be moved to Benin or be retained in Abuja.

According to Fayemi, the decision to have the convention in Lagos was jointly taken by members of the committee and representatives of the five aspirants.

Fayemi said: "We have not taken any decision without the input of all the presidential aspirants. I can assure you of that. We did not arrive at Lagos State accidentally. We did not arrive at Lagos serendipitously. We arrived at Lagos with the full input of all our presidential aspirants, yes, concerns were raised about the distance, for example, someone coming from Yobe State as a delegate or from Maiduguri State."

"It's a practical issue and I would have been surprised if our aspirants did not raise such issue. The duty that I have is to convince them and explain to them the processes we have put in place. They were happy and they have given us full cooperation that Lagos State is acceptable to them."

Former Ekiti State governor, Fayemi, also informed that the over 8,000 delegates are being expected across the country for the convention.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, one of the presidential aspirants said he whole-heartedly welcomes the choice of Lagos as venue for the APC presidential primaries.

It would be recalled that two presidential aspirants, Abubarkar and Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had on Tuesday in a letter of protest addressed to APC National Chairman, expressed displeasure for the choice of Lagos, citing proximity and its peculiar heavy traffic.

But yeesterday, Abubakar said in a statement by his Media Office in Abuja that he is not only delighted that Lagos has been selected to host such an august event, but is confident that the city has all it takes to ensure that the event will be memorable and successful, especially in view of its cosmopolitan nature and the famed easy-going nature of its residents.

The statement said: "It should also be pointed out that the city of Lagos to former Vice President is like a home, bearing in mind that he spent several years of his public service career there."

Court Orders Release of Detained APC Staff

Sitting at a Lagos Federal High Court in Lagos State, Justice Muhammed Nasir Yunusa has ordered the immediate release of five workers of All Progressive Congress, APC, who were arrested and detained by the Department of State Security, DSS, in a raid at the party's Data Centre about two weeks ago.

Justice Mohammed Yunusa, on Monday freed the five staff, saying they were detained without explanation adding that it was against the Constitution.

"The arrest and detention of a person for the purpose of obtaining information is clearly a violation of Section 35 of the Constitution," the judge said. "It is clear that there is a contravention of Section 35 and the applicants were not properly brought before a competent court of jurisdiction."

The SSS accused the staff of "unwholesome activities". Five APC staff, Chinedu Atuche, Fayemi Olaposi, Chika Augustine, Ebun Ilori, and Esther Eninumue, were arrested at the APC data office located at Allen Avenue, Lagos State.

‪The court had at the last adjourned date, ordered the DSS to bring the detained staff to court on Monday.

The judge also made an order restraining the DSS and any other security agency from arresting the five applicants on the suit before the court.

He also ordered that the five APC staff not to travel outside the jurisdiction of the court, and that if there is need or cause for them to travel, they should obtain permission from the court.

‪Justice Yunusa gave the order while ruling on the human rights application filed before the court by the five APC staff, after their lawyer, Professor Yemi Osibajo, and Mr. Osagie, counsel to the DSS had argued and adopted their applications on the matter.

The case was adjourned till 19th January, 2015, for hearing of the substantive suit.

Gunmen Bomb Ekiti Prisons, Kill Official, Free Inmates

Nigeria-Prison

There was panic in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, on Monday when news filtered into town that some heavily armed gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram Islamic group attacked the Federal Prisons and freed some inmates .

According to a source, the assailants, who were said to have besieged the place about 10.30 pm yesterday, killed a prison official on guard, bombed the main gate with the aid of a rocket launcher and dynamite. All the 20 sniffer dogs tied in front of the gate were also killed. The gunmen numbered about 60. Reliable sources said the gunmen arrived in Hilux trucks, brandishing dangerous weapons such as cudgels, cutlasses, AK 47 rifles, charms and chanted 'Allahu Akbar' as they shot sporadically into the air.

A source added that the gunshots and the bombing were so deafening that the inmates had to run in different directions to prevent being mowed down by the gun-wielding assailants.

Early Monday morning, a statement aired on the state radio station had alleged that the action was carried out by APC thugs to free a leader of Oodua People's Congress, Niyi Adedipe, who was imprisoned on the order of the Court for alleged murder of a former chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Chief Omolafe Aderiye.

APC has however denied the allegation, describing it as another ploy by the PDP to tarnish the image of the APC in Ekiti State. The Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Taiwo Olatubosun, who spoke via telephone said: "What shall we gain for doing that. We cannot do such things. It is not in our character to do such things."

President Jonathan to be Served Impeachment Notice on Dec 3

President Goodluck Jonathan is to be served with impeachment notice when the House of Representatives reconvene on Wednesday, Dec 3, according to Rep. Mohammed Tahir Monguno.

Senators and members of the House of Representatives had commenced collecting signatures for the removal of the president after the November 20 security siege on the National Assembly. The reps are not happy about what happened during the siege; the speaker of the House Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and other lawmakers were teargased by the police.

House members had already began collecting signatures that same day while senators followed suit two days after. And according to reports, 200 members and about 60 senators are in support of moves to oust the president.

Monguno, a former Attorney General of Borno State told Sunday Trust that he was one of the 200 members who signed the impeachment motion on November 20, saying, "some newspapers published names of those who signed the motion but my name was conspicuously omitted." He noted that president Jonathan has failed to protect Nigerians against Boko Haram insurgents and therefore has no reason to remain in office anymore.

Monguno said:

"The federal government led by President Goodluck Jonathan has woefully failed to discharge these responsibilities. The government which is solely responsible for the security of the people has failed to protect the lives and property of my constituents. For five years now there have been consistent Boko Haram attacks in various parts of my constituency leading to the displacement of a whole local government in the constituency. Jonathan has woefully failed to provide for the security and welfare of my constituents that was why I signed the motion to oust him."

"We need only one-third of the members of the House to serve the president impeachment notice and so far we have got far more than that so as we resume the motion will be formally tabled for the president to be notified. It is only the removal that requires two third. When we reconvene on December 3rd the president will be served impeachment notice," he explained.

The two aspirants were returned unopposed in their respective constituencies.

The Chairman of the PDP House of Assembly Primaries Committee for Lagos, Mr. Tosin Adeyonju, said "Primaries are elective, but the PDP's constitution recognises consensus too," adding that the aspirants that were returned unopposed would have their tickets ratified by the delegates in their constituencies.

President Jonathan Blames Self Over Reps Speaker's Appointment

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday regretted his inability to push through the appointment of a South West member as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He said he is still haunted by his mistakes.

Speaking at a Yoruba Unity Summit organised by the Yoruba Unity Forum at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, the President blamed the failure of the zone to get the post on the individual interests of some politicians in the South West.

"I always say it, one of the problems I faced in the National Assembly is that I felt the right thing should be done because our party, the PDP has a formula," Jonathan said.

"We have six geo-political zone in the country and when the president emerges from one of the geo-political zones, the vice president emerges from another geo-political zone, the rest core offices, the senate president, the speaker, secretary to federal government, the chairman of the party must come from different geo-political zones.

"The idea is that, whenever we are distributing board positions and some of these appointments, these people sit to take decisions.

"Whenever we are appointing ministers, all these people sit to take decisions. In that case, we want all the geo-political zones to be in the inner caucus that take critical decisions.

"The last time, it was difficult for me because I insisted that the south west must get the speaker. Of course, I couldn’t go through with it because some of us within the south west didn’t want it based on some personal reasons.

"I am still suffering from that till today. That is one of the reasons that the leaders said, this time around, we must work collectively so that whatever position is zoned to the south west, we should get that position. People should not rob it from us."

The President stressed his belief in the unity of the country, appreciated the efforts of the Yoruba people alongside others, adding that government will continue to do more for the South West.

He noted that over 50 percent of the nation's wealth is in the South West, arguing that infrastructure such as airports, rail link and power must therefore be provided to enable the area to continue to provide opportunity for the people.

The president used the occasion as an opportunity for him to salute the collective spirit of the Yoruba people that has seen them play critical roles at every important junction in the history of our country.

Jonathan recalled that it was mainly the agitation of the South West that led to the convening of the National Conference and assured that the recommendations of the conference will be implemented.

"I have said it and I will say it again. We will implement the recommendations," Jonathan said.

"The political environment now is not too conducive for certain good things to be raised because of partisan interest. People are ready to even kill.

"I wouldn't want to play with that document that our great men and women, our egg heads took time to form. I believe the whole context will be taken by government. So, we will surely implement it."

The President called for the cooperation of not just the descendants of Oduduwa but Nigerians at all level. He, however, assured the South West that the federal government will never leave the region behind in development.

Tambuwal: Court Backs Bid to Commit IGP to Prison

Aminu-Waziri-Tambuwal-4

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday gave legal backings to moves by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal to send the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba to prison for disobeying court order. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Suileman Abba, had on Wednesday declined to recognize Hon. Aminu Tambuwal as Speaker, House of Representatives. Rather, he insisted that he knows the Speaker as Alhaji Tambuwal.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed specifically directed the Speaker to put the IGP on notice to come and show cause why he should not be committed to prison.

The court has fixed December 1 to decide the fate of five persons seeking to join in the suit as co-defendants after which hearing in the main suit will commence on December 3.

In the substantive suit against the IG, Tambuwal through his counsel, Lateef Fagbemi SAN who led eight other SANs and 69 lawyers had brought a motion ex parte asking the court directing the Inspector General of Police to appear in person to show why he should not be committed to prison for disobeying the order of court which earlier directed that status quo be maintained.

Olu Falae Flags Off SDP In Lagos, Slams Obasanjo

olu falae

National Chairman of Social Democratic Party (SDP), Olu Falae has flagged off the Lagos chapter of the party and inaugurated the state executive.

Speaking during the inauguration, Falae said: "Already, we are a force to reckon with in Ogun State because we have Senators and members of the House of Representatives in our party. We also have members in Ogun State House of Assembly and we are registering people in droves. Contrary to what people are saying, we are not a spent force because we still have fresh ideas that can move the country forward. We are going to contest every office in Lagos State and we are going to win. We are not going to charge money for women and disabled people who wish to contest."

Also speaking at the event, a chieftain of Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo slammed former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying he has no right to accuse President Jonathan of being corrupt because he is guilty of the same corruption.

"Obasanjo has no moral right to accuse President Jonathan of corruption because he is also guilty. What was his bank account like before he became President and what is his present account? Is he not far wealthier than he was before his election? How many farms, hotels and universities did he have before he became president? How did he build his library?"

Obasanjo had at a recent event in Abuja, accused President Jonathan and the National Assembly of corruption and the dwindling of the economy.

Chief Ayo Adebanjo also took a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC), accusing them of practising the same thing they accuse each other of.

"There is nothing that the APC is accusing the PDP of that they are not also guilty of. They are birds of a feather. They claim that they are emulating Awolowo, but there is nothing to show for it. Can the leaders in APC send their children to public schools in Lagos where the roofs are leaking? Are most of their children not schooling abroad?"

"We Have No Affiliation With Any Political Party" – MTN

There have been photos online of MTN recharge cards bearing the picture of Lagos State governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Akinwunmi Ambode. But MTN, one of the leading telecommunication companies in Nigeria, has distanced itself from the recharge cards bearing the photo.

MTN has denied having any knowledge of the branding, while stating that it does not have "affilliation with any political party" as it is a "non-political and non partisan" organisation.

MTN has to this effect released a statement:
As a corporate organisation MTN is non-political and non-partisan. MTN Nigeria does not have any arrangement with any political party to produce specially branded recharge cards or merchandise.

We also do not have any affiliation with any political party or organisation, either in Nigeria or in any of the 22 countries where MTN operates across Africa and the Middle East.

Furthermore, the company insinuated that some of its authorized partners may be behind the Ambode branded recharge cards, while adding that it would take steps to ensure that the "dealers conform to agreed trade practices".

Operators and their authorized partners are allowed to sell logical PINs to dealers and trade partners, who in turn retail them to third parties and members of the public who may also wish to/reprint them for their private/commercial use.

We will take all prudent steps to ensure that dealers conform to agreed trade practices consistent with statute and policies governing the Industry.

There was commotion at the National Assembly complex in Abuja today which according to reports, began just after the speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal and other law makers were stopped by the State Security operatives from gaining access to the premises.

The premises of the NASS was locked by policemen and in an attempt to force their way in, some lawmakers scaled the fence, while others applied other means.

In the course of this lawful exercise, Alh. Aminu Tambuwal CFR, arrived the venue with a motley crowd, who broke the cordon, assaulted the Police and evaded due process and the Police had the duty to restore order and normalcy, using lawful means

PDP Member Shot Dead in Lagos – APC Chieftain Suspected

Hmmm. Bloody Politics! There was remarkable tension in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State after reports of the killing of a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) went public.

According to the Nigerian Tribune newspaper, Sikiru Ogboye had been in charge of monitoring the distribution of the permanent voters card (PVC) in Ibeju when he was shot dead.

The state command has arrested suspects in connection with the death.

Members of the PDP are accusing an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain of inviting the thugs who reportedly shot Mr. Sikiru.

Chief Bode Oyedele, a PDP chieftain himself, described the death of Sikiru as 'wicked and needless' and said it was a bad omen for the 2015 election in the state.

We Can Reconvene the House Without APC and Tambuwal – Ogor

ABUJA -

The controversies trailing the defection of the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal and the long recess the House of Representatives embarked on has continued to draw a lot of reaction, as the deputy majority leader of the House has put a lie to insinuations that the House cannot reconvene without it being sanctioned by the Speaker.

Ogor was reacting to APC's position that only the Speaker can reconvene the House, stating that house leaders of other political parties in the House of Representatives can reconvene the house without consulting the APC or the Speaker.

He said according to the rules of the House, the remaining political parties can reconvene the plenary without input of the Speaker if there is the need to discuss issues of national interest like the budget.

He denied rumours that the PDP caucus in the House was eager to reconvene so that it can impeach the Speaker, saying the PDP does not have the numerical strength of 240 members needed to carry out the impeachment.

Ogor, spoke to Journalists yesterday at the National Assembly complex.

He cited Order 5(14)2 as the part 6 of the House rules that sanctioned their reconvening if they so wish.

"The House rules clearly state all political parties. Mind you, there are other parties. For anyone to go with the impression that there are no other parties except the PDP and APC, it is misleading," he stated, adding: "it is easy for us to reconvene the House if we so desire. I disagree that we do not have the power to convene the House.

"This issue has nothing to do with impeachment or whatever; what the APC caucus has passed to the public is very wrong and unnecessary interpretation just because they want to be in the favour of the public."
