Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for culpable homicide, after more seven months of the Olympic runner's trial for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius was acquitted of murder. He had testified during his murder trial that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder. Reporters in court in Pretoria say that Arnold Pistorius, uncle of the jailed athlete, has indicated there will be no appeal – the family expected him to go to jail.
The Judge Thokozile Masipa today announced a punishment of five years imprisonment after finding him guilty of culpable homicide.
The following was what she considered before imposing her sentence:
1. Culpable homicide – 5 years in prison
2. For the Tasha shooting – 3 years in prison, wholly suspended for 5 years with conditions
The two sentences will run concurrently.
