The news that former South African President Nelson Mandela had died provoked an emotional display of patriotism and grief as hundreds took to the nation's streets in a show of mourning Thursday night.

Mourners converged on Mr. Mandela's home in the city to light candles and pay tribute to the man who ended apartheid and gave them their freedom.

While some looked sombre and quietly said prayers following Mr. Mandela's passing, others celebrated his achievements in a loud show of patriotism and pride.

Police did set up a cordon outside the property in the wealthy estate of Houghton where Mr. Mandela died aged 95 earlier yesterday evening expecting swathes of people to make their way there.

Although people are visibly emotional, with many bringing flowers to lay in tribute, there was also a celebratory mood.

Hundreds of people waved South Africa flags, embraced, clapped and chanted Mr. Mandela's name as they remembered their first democratically elected president.
