Statement from military, citing Secret Service

The suspect that triggered the lockdown on Capitol Hill attempted to breach the White House grounds before heading to the Hill, with police in pursuit, according to an account of the incident sent by the U.S. military command in Washington, which attributed the information to the Secret Service.

"The suspect then attempted to ram the gate at the Hart building and was shot," said the statement, referring to a building in Congress.

"There are also other injuries due to the vehicle chase and shoot out."

Shelter in place has now been lifted. People are allowed to exit shelter locations and resume normal activities.
