PRESIDENT Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said that government alone cannot fund university education, therefore charging the society and the Universities come to the rescue of the federal government.
Speaking at the convocation ceremony of University of Ilorin, President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by Barrister Nyesom Wike, the Supervising Minister for education said that Universities should find ways of generating income to supplement the federal government funding while also calling on the society as well as stake holders to also join hands in funding University education in Nigeria.
He said: "Public funding of Universities has
been on the upward swing in the last few years, it is important to emphasize the point that government alone is incapable of providing all the funding required"
“Therefore, while government will continue to provide the necessary legislative and policy initiatives to enhance good governance and improve funding for higher education in the country, the society and the Universities must bridge the gap by complementing government effort."
The President also commended the management of the University of Ilorin for maintaining unbroken academic calendar and remaining focused at maintaining the dream of building excellent employable graduates, reiterating that the idea of turning out unemployable graduates is not acceptable.
The President added that if the Universities must survive in the future and remain relevant, new approaches must be employed in the art of doing things to meet the needs of the population they serve and the constituency they serve.
In his own goodwill message, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed, Governor of Kwara state, charged the graduands to keep the flag of the University flying and maintain the good name of the institution.
The Governor, who is an Alumni of the University expressed his gratitude to God that made him pass through the institution adding that all graduands should also be proud to have passed through the school.
