35-Year-Old Rapes 5-Year-Old Girl

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, has remanded a 35-year-old ex-Councillor aspirant in Okun, Kogi state, Gbenga Sunday, for alleged rape of a five-year-old girl in Ilorin. It was gathered that the victim (name withheld) on 18th June, 2013 was lured by Sunday to his room with sweet and raped her. Sensing the implication of his action, he went into hiding until he resurfaced with policemen to arrest victim's grandmother for blackmailing him on the matter.

The SARS Police who have been searching for the suspect however detained him at the police station after his identity was revealed by the victim's grandmother.

The First Police Report (FIR) stated that the suspect's action was rape, contrary to section 283 of penal code law.

According to the FIR by prosecutor Olatunji Aransioye, "On 20/06/2013, one Yunusa Salamat, female, of No. 6 Railway lane, Ilorin, Kwara State, came to report at the ‘X’ Squad office of the Nigeria Police Force State Headquaters Ilorin that on 18th June, 2013, ...she discovered that her grand daughter (name withheld) aged five years was in discomfort and when asked what happened, she narrated to her that one Gbenga Sunday, male, of the same address who is her neighbour lured her into his room, laid on bed and unlawfully had carnal knowledge of her."

"'She stated further that upon examining her grand daughter’s vagina she discovered bruises on her. Hence her report to the police. During the course of police investigation, the suspect admitted luring the victim into his room with sweet after which he forced his finger into her vagina'".

Justice A. Adeniyi who sat on the case adjourned the case till July 10, 2013.
