Nelson Mandela Museum to Undergo R15Million Renovation

The Nelson Mandela Museum in Qunu, Eastern Cape, which documents the family life of late South African leader, Mandela, with audio extracts from his book, Long Walk to Freedom is to be given R15Million for the renovation of the accommodation and conference facility of the museum.

The Department of Public Works in South Africa confirmed the facelift of the museum which has fallen into a state of disrepair over the past ten years.

Over R15Million has been budgeted for the renovation. The repairs will take effect from the amphitheater roof at the youth and heritage centre, where security control and new chalets will also be built.

The museum's marketing and communications manager, Nokuzola Tetani said the museum, which has created an avenue for international visitors over the past year, will be reshaped to welcome even more international visitors.

"The highest number of visitors in the past was 2000 a month. Early this year, we recorded 8000 visitors a month," she said.

"Everyone wants to see this house when they visit South Africa. They know the history of South Africa and what Mandela did for the country, and are always curious to see this house and anything related to him."
