KUWAIT – Canadian warplanes have launched their first air strike against militants in Iraq.
Defence Minister Rob Nicholson says two CF-18 fighter jets attacked targets on Sunday in the vicinity of Fallujah, 70 kilometres west of Baghdad.
It's the first strike that Canada has launched since deploying to the region as part of the American-led bombing campaign against the Islamic State.
A news release from Nicholson says the mission lasted roughly four hours and also involved a Canadian Polaris aircraft that conducted refuelling.
He says all aircraft safely returned to base.
